Today we’re going to the Oxford Fair. A fair sound fun, right? This one is to support the families affected by the Oxford school shooting. We will go and support it, and it makes my heart sad. One, because there have been 3 other mass shootings since the one in Oxford. Two, is I have a fear of this senseless violence being normalized, by how often this has been happening. Similarly, children at a young age are indoctrinated to graphic violence through video games and TV shows. This is entertainment? It begins to anesthetized us to violence as a whole. Should we arm everyone and let the strongest (or craziest) survive?
On one of my Saturday morning calls, a woman told of how her 20 year old daughter completely broke down when a news story came on about one of these shootings. It feels so overwhelming at times. How do we keep our children safe? How do we keep ourselves safe? Somehow this young woman gave me hope. This grieving young woman who could feel such empathy and compassion, ignited a spark of hope that things might be ok. This young generation, that often gets ridiculed, is our future, and I think they overall, show a lot of promise. They should cry for this world we created, where people often seem to care for things over people, the ridiculous wealth inequity in our country, and the rapid rates at which we’re exhausting our natural resources and are destroying our planet.
Sometimes it feels hopeless, yet if someone still feels enough to cry, we have a chance. A better future can be had. There are groups out there striving to make a change in our current trajectory. HeartMath teaches heart coherence, where people learn to lead with their hearts, not their heads. Avatar, a company striving to raise people’s consciousness and compassion for all people. I am moved by their mission statement.
“The mission of Avatar in the world is to catalyze the integration of belief systems.
When we perceive that the only difference between us is our beliefs and that beliefs can be created or discreated with ease, the right and wrong game will wind down, a co-create game will unfold and world peace will ensue.”
To be fair, I know there is no quick fix to this problem. But promoting compassion over violence I think is a darn good starting place. If we could strive to understand rather than be understood, we could start a potentially healing dialogue. There is so much division in the world right now and so much division in our country in particular. I do think basically all people want the same thing. We want to keep our children safe and keep the earth intact. It all starts with compassion. So, thank-you young lady for crying for us, you awoke something in me. Let’s spread this loving compassion to all, especially those you don’t understand. What a difference we could make. Don’t worry about what’s fair, do it anyway.
I know that you, just like me, are doing the best you can in this world of ours. I love you.
